Can Heath Ledger Win an Oscar In a Superhero Movie?
What are Heath Ledger’s Oscar chances? That seems to be a big question these days, considering the unprecedented circumstances of his untimely death prior to the release of his biggest role. Buzz around this performance has been higher than that of any I can remember, and after having seen the film, I honestly think he should be considered the frontrunner at this stage of the game.
The only real obstacle Ledger may have to overcome, aside from the usual competition that will arise come Oscar season, is the stigma of a superhero movie. Big budget summer flicks aren’t generally give much consideration when it comes time to hand out some hardware unless you want to talk about sound and special effects. I don’t think will be a problem in this case, as The Dark Knight has garnered incredible reviews, all of which are quick to mention his incredible turn as The Joker. The positive wave of publicity the film is receiving will help legitimize it against the more standard Oscar fare to be released later in the year.
In the end, superhero movie or not, this was a career defining role for Ledger, and it’s been said many times, it’s a shame that he won’t be around to continue to evolve and navigate his career path like many before him.
Batman Claims Opening Weekend Record
The Dark Knight edged out Spiderman 3 to claim the all-time weekend box office record, scoring a massive $155.3 million in ticket sales. Spiderman 3 grossed $151.1 million, but actually sold slightly more tickets than The Dark Knight due to cheaper tickets when it was released. Batman is expected to do considerably better over the long haul however, with extremely positive reviews and buzz surrounding the film, in addition to Oscar buzz building for costar Heath Ledger’s performance.

Who is the new Bond Girl?
One question that gets asked almost immediately after the announcement of any new Bond film is always “Who is the new Bond girl?” Quantum of Solace is set to hit theaters later this year, and as in some of the previous films, audiences will be graced with not one, but two new Bond girls.
First, 28-year-old Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko:

And girl #2 is 22-year-old British actress Gemma Arterton:

What is Hancock Twist?
I’ve seen a lot of interest out there in wanting to know what the Hancock plot twist is, I guess people have heard that you either like it or you don’t, and knowing in advance will help decide whether to see the movie or not. I’ve seen the movie, and I’ll only say that I can see why certain people would be turned off by the plot twist, but I found it a little refreshing and at least fairly unique in the way they designed Hancock’s weakness (I mean, every superhero HAS to have a weakness or you’d have little to work with in plot development).
I recommend the movie as a summer popcorn flick that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. That being said, if you’re still unsure and asking yourself “OK already, what IS the Hancock twist”, you can find out all about it at this link. It goes without saying, the link is very spoiler heavy!
